Chris Layton drummer for Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble



Chris joins Mark on the Blues Cruise to discuss life in the blues and playing drums for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Chris is one of the founding members of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s band Double Trouble. Chris moved to Austin in 1975 and joined Double Trouble in 1978. After forming successful partnerships with bandmates Tommy Shannon and Reese Wynans, Double Trouble recorded and performed with Vaughan until his death in 1990. Layton and Shannon later formed supergroups such as the Arc Angels, Storyville, and Grady. Chris is now the drummer for the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band.

Fido is a founding member of Canned Heat. Canned Heat rose to fame because their knowledge and love of blues music was both wide and deep. Emerging in 1966, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite. The band attained three worldwide hits, “On The Road Again” in 1968, “Let’s Work Together” in 1970 and “Going Up The Country” in 1969 became rock anthems throughout the world with the latter being adopted as the unofficial theme song for the film Woodstock and the “Woodstock Generation.”

Mark and Peter Albin founder of Big Brother & The Holding Company talk about San Francisco in the 60’s: Janis Joplin’s impact, and his friendship with Jett Garcia, PigPen and the Jefferson Airplane.  Peter remembers taking Jimi Hendrix to the store for beer, and watching BB King play a night of Gospel tunes the night Martin Luther King was murdered. Peter recalls the night at the Monterey Pop Festival that put the band on the map, and the argument backstage between Jimi Hendrix and The Who.

Remembering James Harman



Mark talks about the roots of blues and his friend James Harman.

James Gary Harman (June 8, 1946 – May 23, 2021) was an American blues harmonica player, singer, and songwriter. The music journalist Tony Russell described Harman as an “amusing songwriter and an excellent, unfussy blues harp player”.
